Detoxification Services

Detoxification is the process of safely transitioning from using intoxicants to abstinence from the problem substance. The human body naturally seeks homeostasis and adapts to the use of alcohol and other intoxicants. This adaptation leads to physical symptoms such as pain, insomnia, nausea, or more severe symptoms such as seizures. Psychological symptoms can include anxiety, panic, depression, or more severe symptoms such as hallucinations. Safety is always the primary goal. Relieving symptoms safely and comfortably is an important step in beginning your recovery journey.

Alcohol

After a complete assessment, outpatient and inpatient detoxification will be discussed. When appropriate, medically supervised detoxification can be provided. The most common medications used for detoxification from alcohol are the benzodiazepines like oxazepam or chlordiazepoxide, but each treatment plan is individualized.

Opiates

Detoxification is the process of either safely stopping the use of fentanyl, hydrocodone or other opiates, or transitioning to a medication assisted treatment such as buprenorphine. After a complete assessment, outpatient and inpatient detoxification will be discussed. When appropriate, medically supervised detoxification can be provided. The most common medications used for detoxification from opiates are buprenorphine (Subutex or Suboxone), clonidine, muscle relaxants, and anti-inflammatories. Acupuncture assisted detoxification is available and often decreases the need for medications.

Other intoxicants or medications

Every evaluation includes a complete review of all medications and substances. The ultimate goal is the fewest possible medications at the lowest dose that achieve optimal function. Some medications like sedatives and hypnotics require a medically supervised detoxification for safety reasons. Some medications should be slowly tapered to avoid discontinuation symptoms. Other medications can be safely stopped immediately.
